Apesar da tendência vinculada a era Hippie do "ser", a origem do Tie Dye remete-se a tempos bem mais remotos. Tapar ou vedar parte do tecido e em seguida tingi-lo, para obter desenhos e texturas, é uma técnica que já era adotada na Pré História. Os primeiros registros de tal técnica de tingimento data-se da era pré-colombiana, a partir de 500 a 800 AC, no Peru. A arte de tingimento reverenciava pequenos círculos e linhas, com cores brilhantes, incluindo vermelho, azul, amarelo e verde.
No Japão, também encontram-se vestígios da existência de tal técnica desde o século VII. Conhecido como Shibori, a arte aplicada para tal tingimento depende de conhecimentos técnicos bem específicos acerca de tecidos e corantes.
O recurso de amarrar, alinhavar, prensar, dobrar e enrolar o tecido pode ser utilizado de forma isolada ou combinada, tornando a técnica rica e de infinitas possibilidades. Os principais padrões obtidos, são conhecidos por nomes específicos. Tie Dye ou Shibori são alguns deles.
Tendência permanente tanto para primavera quanto para o verão, o Tie Dye surpreende a todos com uma padronagem mais eclética. Gostos mais despojados e vibrantes continuam sendo satisfeitos com a padronagem básica e tridimensional do estilo em questão. Contudo, para quem não curte tanto o estilo hippie do Tie Dye original, diversas padronagens mais clássicas foram elaboradas para estilos mais sóbrios e casuais.
